When mentioning Engineered Wood Floors the most common response is that they are a cheap substitute to solid wood floors. This is then followed by confusion because the price for an engineered floor is often higher than the solid version. The illusion with wood flooring is people see a solid wood floor and assume quality, when in reality solid wood means limitations to where and how it can be installed. People forget Engineered wood flooring is improving on nature. Manufacturing a solid plank of wood is often cheaper than manufacturing an engineered plank, people assume that because an engineered floor has only 3 - 6mm veneer of hardwood it is saving on materials and should reduce the price of the product. Floating a plank of solid oak over 6 inches wide and 7 ft long (in old money) over a concrete slab would not be an option if it were not for engineered wood flooring. The simple fact is these floors are at least 70% more stable than solid wood floors and use the highest quality materials, choosing engineered wood is not the budget option it is more often than not the best option.

| Engineered Floors
are usually installed floating meaning they are not fixed to the subfloor
below, and "float" on an underlay. The underlay is an important part of the installation and the quality and thickness of the underlay has a bearing on the performance of the floor. Buying a high quality floor and putting cheap 2mm thick foam underlay will result in a poor installation if the floor is not perfectly level. the wood can sound "tinny" when walked upon because the noise is not absorbed by the underlay. Choosing a thick underlay 5mm or more is even more likely to result in a poor installation because the extra cushioning will allowing the floor to move underfoot and eventually break apart. The high performance underlay is 3mm - 4.5mm thick with a moisture barrier and reduce sound impact. |
